Pat Cohans
Bar to serve its first pint 57 years after it opened its doors to the World
You have heard to old saying “ The Pub with no
Beer” well there really is one and it is the most famous bar in the world “
Pat Cohan’s in Cong. This land mark came to fame through the making of the John
Ford Classic “The Quiet Man”.
Jack Murphy who owned this shop has now retired and his nephew John Connolly
is now setting about the make over of the premises nothing will be spared in
detail he said and it will be just like a step back in time when we are
finished with it.
This should prove a major draw for tourists to the village of Cong and to the
west of Ireland in general as the Quiet Man has been a real money spinner for
businesses in the village already as it is now translated in several different
languages worldwide.
Paddy Rock who runs tours of the Quiet Man Country locations said that he
hopes the owner of the Quiet Man Cottage Mr Gregory Ebbitt (a Californian)
will now see sense and set about restoring the mess which was once the pride
and joy of Sean and Mary Kate Dannagher but now stands derelict in the
beautiful Maam Valley.
He said that although the tourists enjoy the beauty of
Connemara Galway and
Mayo on their day long tours it has been really disappointing for them when
they were not able to have a pint in Cohans or visit the Quiet Man Cottage
however this will now all change in 2008.
It is planned to have the official opening of Pat Cohans early 2008. For further information and updates on
the opening you can log on to
